This represents a reduction in weekly cases and deaths of 9% and 12%, respectively. In the last 28 days (12 December 2022 to 8 January 2023), over 13.9 million cases and over 49 000 new deaths were reported globally – an increase of 10% and 22% respectively, compared to the previous 28 days. In Niger, COVID-19 vaccination is reaching people where they are thanks to ECHOFrom urban hubs to the most remote villages, WHO helps vaccinate adult populations in Niger against COVID-19, with support from ECHO's generous €16 million grant, which has helped raise COVID-19 vaccination rates in a group of countries in Africa where coverage levels were among the lowest in the world. Donors making a difference in 2022In 2022, WHO made a difference in people’s lives thanks to the help of donors. Some examples of our main achievements this year are the elimination of blinding eye infection in Malawi and Vanuatu; elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission in Oman; avoiding an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a Marburg disease outbreak in Ghana; eliminating rubella in Singapore; immunizing half a million children against polio in 48 hours in Zambia, and more.
